Benjamin Middaugh
Benjamin Middaugh is emeritus professor of music at the University of Montevallo, having recently retired after 38 years of service, teaching studio voice, vocal pedagogy, musical theatre production, and other voice-related courses. As director of UM Lyric Theatre for over 30 years, Middaugh was responsible for the production of such works as The Consul, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, The Mikado, The Music Man, Oklahoma!, Into The Woods, and the world premiere of Allan Davis' The Departure, among others. He received his Doctor of Music in Vocal Performance degree from Florida Sate University, where he was a student of Elena Nikolaidi.
Middaugh's professional performing experience includes opera, oratorio, recital, and musical comedy appearances throughout the eastern and southern states. In Birmingham, he has appeared with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Civic Opera, Southern Regional Opera, Town and Gown Theatre, Center Players, Actors Theatre, Festival Theatre and Hoover Library Theatre in major roles from Man of La Mancha, La Cage Aux Folles, South Pacific, A Little Night Music, Amadeus, The Marriage of Figaro, and Cosi Fan Tutte, to list a few. With Birmingham Summerfest, he has performed leading and supporting roles in Kismet (with former student Rebecca Luker), Pirates of Penzance, The Sound of Music, Me and My Gal, Will Rogers Follies, Hello Dolly!, Footloose - The Musical, and Sugar, for which he won an Obelisk Award.
He is co-founder of Southern Regional Opera and served as musical director/conductor for Birmingham's Center Players. He was a national winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs' Young Artists Award and has performed at the White House and in Carnegie Hall.
